1-on-1 Surf Therapy Session

1-on-1 Surf Therapy Session

May-October. This session is for kids, teens, and young adults.

Ages 4-21. Sessions are 45 minutes in length. A safe, fun, and guided approach to surfing. Each lesson is specialized to each individual child. During our time at the beach, we play in the sand, jump over waves, and develop comfort and confidence with our surfboard and the ocean. It is a space to play and grow.

Areas of support include

  • Maturity of Sensory Systems

What is Maturity of Sensory Integration?

Sensory Integration, or Sensory Processing, is the remarkable capacity of the brain to efficiently manage and make sense of information received from all your vital internal and external sensory systems. It is the foundation for participation in daily life, allowing us to filter out irrelevant input and focus on what truly matters.

Efficient sensory processing is crucial for developing higher-level skills, including:

    Attention and nervous system regulation

    Regulated breathing and quality sleep

Gross and fine motor skill development

    Academic learning and participation

Positive social engagement and emotional regulation

How Does Surf Therapy Boost Sensory Integration?

Our expert-guided surf therapy is a powerful, natural environment that actively supports and matures your child's sensory systems. The unique combination of ocean and surfboard provides rich, multi-sensory experiences that directly translate to greater comfort, confidence, and self-regulation in everyday life.

Surf therapy specifically promotes sensory integration through:

Enhanced Body Awareness (Vestibular & Proprioceptive Input): When children are in the water, riding a surfboard, or catching even small waves, they receive essential input to their vestibular system (balance/movement) and proprioceptive system (body position/force). This integration enhances their awareness of their body in space, which is critical for motor planning and coordination.

Maturing the Tactile System: The beach setting provides gentle, repetitive exposure to a variety of textures. This includes acclimating to the sensation of sand between the toes, putting on a wetsuit, or applying sunscreen, which helps mature and regulate the tactile system, improving comfort with different textures in everyday life.

Refining Auditory and Visual Processing: The dynamic beach environment requires children to skillfully filter out natural noises (auditory input) and visually attend to their surroundings in the water. They practice tracking waves, observing other surfers, and focusing on the direction they are traveling, thereby sharpening their visual attention and focus.

Fostering Interoception (Internal Body Cues): As children develop stronger body awareness by integrating their external sensory systems, their internal systems also become more regulated. This increased interoception enables them to accurately notice and respond to their body’s internal cues, such as regulating breathing, recognizing signs of hunger or sleep, or knowing when to use the bathroom.

  • Development of Motor Skills

Motor skill development naturally builds upon a strong foundation of sensory integration. Our therapeutic approach at the beach is designed to enhance the critical motor skills your child needs to navigate their world with competence and confidence.

Key motor skills we support include:

    Postural Strength and Balance

    Bilateral Integration

    Motor Coordination (e.g., hand-eye coordination)

Gross and Fine Motor Strength and Coordination

How Surf Therapy Champions Motor Skill Development

The dynamic, natural environment of the ocean is a perfect setting to challenge and develop your child's movement and motor skills.

Exceptional Postural Strength and Balance: Surf therapy heavily addresses these foundational skills. A child must utilize their postural muscles (core and back) to maintain stability while lying down on the board. As they progress to standing, they actively work on balance and equilibrium, building a strong, resilient body.

Seamless Bilateral Integration: This refers to the ability to use both sides of the body in a coordinated manner. Activities like paddling require both sides to work in a rhythmic, balanced motion. This is further supported by engaging activities on the sand, such as therapeutic yoga or specialized obstacle courses that prepare your child for surfing success.

Holistic Motor Coordination: As your child develops strength, they gain the ability to use their body as a whole, integrated system. This includes improving crucial skills such as hand-eye coordination and integrating upper- and lower-body movements. Learning to surf demands a high level of body awareness and coordination, helping your child learn to leverage their entire body effectively.

Targeted Gross and Fine Motor Skill Development: For children with specific needs in gross or fine motor skills, our sessions include activities before entering the water. We also work with you, the parent, to provide support and resources that can be integrated into the home environment, while the beach remains the ideal setting for all other needs.

  • Improving Strength and Coordination

There are a number of factors that can impact your child's ability to develop strength and move in a comfortable, coordinated way. These can often trace back to early developmental experiences.

    Potential Foundational Factors Include:

Non-integrated Primitive Reflexes: These are automatic movements that typically integrate (disappear) as a baby grows. If they persist, they can interfere with later motor skill development.

Early Restrictions: A history of oral restrictions or torticollis (a twisted neck) in infancy can influence muscular development and alignment.

Gastrointestinal Issues: Avoiding tummy time due to challenges like reflux or constipation can impact the development of core and back muscles.

These foundational issues can subtly influence overall muscular development, affecting the fluid, relaxed muscles required for excellent body awareness and motor coordination.

Our Therapeutic Approach: Exploring and Building Strength

It's important to understand that surfing is not a direct "fix" for underlying physical restrictions in the body.

However, once we have thoroughly explored and addressed any potential restrictions (a process we guide you through, often in collaboration with a medical team), surf therapy becomes a powerful catalyst for growth.

Surf therapy will then begin to actively support your child’s ability to:

    Build essential strength.

    Integrate retained reflexes.

Develop strong coordination and motor control.

This post-supportive phase allows your child to move and breathe freely, fostering a strong and coordinated body ready to thrive.

  • Developing Physical and Emotional Regulation

    What is Physical Regulation?

Physical Regulation is your child’s remarkable ability to shift out of a high-stress state (often called "fight/flight/freeze") and comfortably return to a state of calm, known as "rest and digest."

For children who experience sensory processing challenges, physical challenges, or social difficulties, the body’s alarm system can be easily triggered, leading to rapid dysregulation.

The Deep Connection: Physical and Emotional Regulation

Emotional regulation is inextricably linked to physical regulation. When a child's body is physically dysregulated, it can quickly lead to emotional fatigue and overwhelming feelings.

In these moments, you may observe:

Emotional Lability: Rapid and often intense fluctuations in mood.

Difficulty with Transitions: Struggling to shift between tasks, especially from a preferred activity to a non-preferred one.

Poor Frustration Tolerance: A low threshold for coping with setbacks or challenges.

Anger Outbursts: Intense expressions of frustration or distress.

Anxiety or Sadness: Persistent feelings of worry, unease, or low mood.

Inflexibility: Resistance to changes in routine or established ways of doing things.

    How Surf Therapy Cultivates Regulation

The ocean and the natural environment are powerful therapeutic tools for teaching self-regulation. Being in nature, entering the water, and even riding a surfboard on their tummy helps to:

Create Physical Regulation: The rhythmic motion of the ocean and the focused task of surfing help to soothe the nervous system.

Regulate Breathing: Intentional breathing is often required, which directly calms the body.

Connect to Self: The quiet focus of the activity helps the child tune into their body’s internal state.

Process Emotions: The safe, therapeutic space allows the child to recognize, talk about, and work through different feelings.

Finally, as your child encounters playful yet ever-changing challenges on the beach and in the ocean, they gain essential opportunities to safely navigate and work through feelings in a fun, supportive environment.

  • Supporting Play, and a strong sense of self

As children navigate their world, they continually develop an awareness of their physical body in space and their identity in relation to others. When faced with physical, emotional, or social challenges, a child may begin to shy away from fully engaging with the world, which can impact their sense of self and the ownership of their wonderful, unique identity.

Surf therapy provides a safe, playful, and therapeutic space for growth. As children learn and master new skills in the ocean, they gain a profound sense of accomplishment and self-efficacy. This journey is about more than the skills gained; it is about:

Recognizing personal strengths in a supportive environment.

Addressing areas of challenge with guidance and confidence.

Our goal is to foster a strong and resilient belief in themselves—the confidence to know that what they achieve in the water can be applied to all areas of their life.
